The third annual sci-art exhibition &ldquo;Refuse REFUSE&rdquo; is organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205960\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-art-exhibit-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"woman holding a net\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-205960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-art-exhibit-2-1.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-art-exhibit-2-1-102x130.jpg 102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jocelyn Ng, featured artist in monthlong exhibit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In partnership with the Papah&#257;naumoku&#257;kea Marine Debris Project and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Pacific University\u2019s Center for Marine Debris Research, &ldquo;Refuse REFUSE&rdquo; features a dynamic collection of art by 15 local artists, 7 selected students from <span aria-label=\"Kau\">Ka&#699;u<\/span> High and Pahala Elementary School who participated in the Youth Art Competition, and two classrooms from K&#299;papa Elementary and Voyager Public Charter School. Opening night will provide an opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments and listen to live music by Sarah Woo.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant is delighted to host our third annual exhibit, working with artists to bring the community together and confront the critical issue of marine debris,&rdquo; said Beth Lenz, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant\u2019s assistant director for diversity and community engagement who organized and curated the exhibit. &ldquo;Through art, we acknowledge that environmental challenges are personal and relatable, inspiring viewers to reconnect with the ocean and envision a healthy sustainable future for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Hawai&#699;i.<\/span>&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit will feature a selection of art by Jocelyn Ng whose collaborative works deepen the connection among art, culture, science and community impact. Ng\u2019s series of 10 mixed-media portraits encapsulates the powerful intersection between cultural identity and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-art-exhibit-3.jpg\" alt=\"painting of a wave\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-205961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-art-exhibit-3.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-art-exhibit-3-102x130.jpg 102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project feels like a return to the source, a way to reclaim our relationship with the ocean by transforming what\u2019s been discarded into something sacred, something that speaks of our collective story,&rdquo; Ng said. &ldquo;Each portrait holds the mana of those whose lives are intertwined with the roses, carrying their knowledge, their struggles, and their love for the sea. It\u2019s an invitation to turn back with open hearts, to honor and protect the ocean as we would our own kin, and to envision a future where we move in balance with its ebb.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Science, stories seminar series<\/h2>\n<p>Every Monday at The ARTS at Marks Garage during the sci-art exhibit the public will have the opportunity to learn from early career scientists and local artists as they share their unique perspectives on scientific research, art and understanding.
