  {"id":207305,"date":"2024-12-04T12:49:47","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T22:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=207305"},"modified":"2024-12-04T12:54:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T22:54:05","slug":"students-celebrate-hawaiian-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/12\/04\/students-celebrate-hawaiian-independence\/","title":{"rendered":"300 students celebrate Hawaiian independence at Kaua\u02bbi <abbr>CC<\/abbr>"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_207313\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207313\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-4.jpg\" alt=\"3 people playing Hawaiian game\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-207313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-4.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-4-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students from different schools competed in Makahiki games.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 300 middle and high school students visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> in November for L&#257; <span aria-label=\"KUokoa\">K&#363;&#699;oko&#699;a<\/span>, which was first celebrated in 1843 to commemorate Great Britain and France signing a proclamation that recognized the independence of the Kingdom of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207310\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"students playing Makahiki games\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-207310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kauai-la-kuokoa-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Champions from each school competed against each other.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The students came from Waimea High School, <span aria-label=\"Kapaa\">Kapa&#699;a<\/span> High School, Ka <span aria-label=\"Oha,\">&#699;Oh&#257;,<\/span> Kanuikapono, Kawaikini, and Ke Kula o <span aria-label=\"Niihau.\">Ni&#699;ihau.<\/span> They rotated between films, activities such as <span aria-label=\"kui\">ku&#699;i<\/span> kalo (pounding poi), playing k&#333;nane (a board game), and making kapa (traditional Native Hawaiian bark cloth), presentations and makahiki (Hawaiian festival) games.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We choose to honor L&#257; <span aria-label=\"KUokoa\">K&#363;&#699;oko&#699;a<\/span> as a way to instill national pride in our people and because it is a powerful expression of aloha <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (patriotism),&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\/hawaiian-studies\">Hawaiian Studies<\/a> Assistant Professor <span aria-label=\"Pualiiliimaikalani\">Puali&#699;ili&#699;imaikalani<\/span> Rossi-Fukino said. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College has celebrated L&#257; <span aria-label=\"KUokoa\">K&#363;&#699;oko&#699;a<\/span> for 10 years. We want our students and our campus to honor and uplift the Hawaiian culture, its history and traditions.
