These groups face higher rates of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes compared to others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2024\/24_0156.htm\">A recent study<\/a> by <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/healthyhawaiievaluation\/\">Healthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Evaluation Team<\/a>, in partnership with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Health and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Primary Care Association, looked at the barriers keeping people from joining and staying in these programs.<\/p>\n<h2>Why these programs matter<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-nh-family-fishing-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"family of three by fish pond\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-207510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-nh-family-fishing-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-nh-family-fishing-130x74.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-nh-family-fishing.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Programs like the National Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Change Program (National <abbr>DPP<\/abbr> <abbr>LCP<\/abbr>) help delay or prevent type 2 diabetes. But many people are hesitant to sign up. Common concerns include time commitments, caregiving duties, and a lack of familiarity with the program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our study gathered insights directly from Native Hawaiian and Filipino adults, who are often left out of research like this,&rdquo; said lead author Kara Saiki from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/schools-colleges\/sw\/\">Thompson School of Social Work &#38; Public Health<\/a>. &ldquo;We also highlighted how two rural Hawai\u02bbi programs successfully recruited and retained participants. This can help others better reach these communities.&#038;rdquo<\/p>\n<h2>Trusted coaches make a difference<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-public-health-mother-child-soccer-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"mother and daughter playing soccer\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-207511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-public-health-mother-child-soccer-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-public-health-mother-child-soccer-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-public-health-mother-child-soccer.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The study found that lifestyle coaches play a key role in encouraging participation. Coaches who are trusted community members provide personalized support and help participants stick with the program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Coaches understand the unique challenges our communities face and connect participants to local resources,&rdquo; said Jermy Domingo, health equity director at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Primary Care Association. &ldquo;Their support makes the program\u2019s lessons practical and builds trust with participants.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The bigger picture<\/h2>\n<p>The study shows that community-based strategies are essential for improving health and preventing diabetes in underserved groups.
