Credit: Paul Lethaby.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa continues to solidify its status as a leading research institution, ranking <abbr title=\"Number\">No<\/abbr>. 92 among the top 660 research universities in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 68 among the top 420 public universities. This is according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ncses.nsf.gov\/surveys\/higher-education-research-development\/2023#data\">National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>) Higher Education Research and Development (<abbr>HERD<\/abbr>) survey<\/a>, which measures research and development (R&#38;D) expenditures across various disciplines and serves as the primary source for R&#38;D data in U.S. higher education.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/05\/nsf-herd-data\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa among nation\u2019s best in latest research rankings<\/a>, February 5, 2024<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Top-performing disciplines<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa demonstrated research excellence across a range of critical fields, with several disciplines maintaining their place in the top 10&#37; nationally for fiscal year (<abbr>FY<\/abbr>) 2023:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ocean sciences and marine sciences<\/strong>: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 7 out of 414 (top 2&#37;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Astronomy and astrophysics<\/strong>: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 15 out of 517 (top 3&#37;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geological and earth sciences<\/strong>: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 13 out of 414 (top 3&#37;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Computer and information sciences<\/strong>: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 39 out of 500 (top 8&#37;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication and communications technologies<\/strong>: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 37 out of 474 (top 8&#37;, ranked in top 10&#37; for the first time)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Atmospheric science and meteorology<\/strong>: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 41 out of 414 (top 10&#37;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa also excelled in agricultural sciences (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 40 out of 343, top 12&#37;) and electrical, electronic, and communications engineering (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 49 out of 403, top 12&#37;).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our continued presence among the nation\u2019s top research universities reaffirms the strength and consistency of our research programs at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa,&rdquo; said Interim Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship Christopher Sabine. &ldquo;These rankings are a testament to our faculty and researchers and proof of our commitment to innovative research and scholarship to address challenges here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and beyond.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Examples of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa projects that attracted significant funding, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Ocean Time-series (<abbr>HOT<\/abbr>) established in 1988 that studies climate and environmental changes in the North Pacific. This marks the third consecutive year <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> has exceeded half a billion dollars in funding.<\/p>\n<h2>National research trends<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>HERD<\/abbr> survey revealed an 11.2&#37; increase in national academic R&#38;D spending in <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2023, the largest growth rate in two decades.
