The three-year project will be led by Native Hawaiian librarians Shavonn Matsuda (<a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>), Kapena Shim (<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), Annemarie Paikai (<a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>), and Keahiahi Long (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">Library and Information Science Program<\/a>, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa). Housed within <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Library Services, it aims to develop a Hawaiian-language-controlled vocabulary system that will be used to organize and describe library collections using traditional Hawaiian practices.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating Hawaiian language catalog system<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_209781\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-209781\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/manoa-library-jean-charlot-papers-boxed-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"boxes on shelves\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-209781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/manoa-library-jean-charlot-papers-boxed-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/manoa-library-jean-charlot-papers-boxed-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/manoa-library-jean-charlot-papers-boxed.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-209781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Part of the 90 linear feet of John Charlot Papers to be described using the Hawaiian Knowledge Organization System.<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A key component of the project is the co-creation of a Hawaiian language newspaper index, or N\u016bpepa Index, designed to improve access to community-indexed information found in Hawaiian-language newspapers. The <abbr>HKOS<\/abbr> will also be applied to catalog the John Charlot Papers, an invaluable archive containing works by the influential scholar of Hawaiian religion and culture.
