Halagao and Perillo are leading efforts to expand Philippine studies in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and globally. (Photo credit: <abbr>DFA<\/abbr>-Office of Public Diplomacy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As part of their visit, Halagao, a professor in the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a>\u2019s Curriculum Studies Department, and Perillo, an associate professor in the College of Arts, Languages and Letter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/\">Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a>, participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogophilstudies.upd.edu.ph\/\">&ldquo;Dialogo: Philippine Studies Goes Global&ldquo;<\/a> conference at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CPS<\/abbr> co-directors organized discussions, including a roundtable with academic leaders from Australia, Germany, China and the Philippines on the challenges and future directions of Philippine Studies.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was gratifying to see how our Center fits into the long legacy of Philippine Studies, witness its global growth, and explore opportunities to collaborate with regional centers in the Philippines to elevate local perspectives and Indigenous knowledge,&ldquo; shared Halagao.<\/p>\n<h2>Strengthening global, local ties<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_210550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210550\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/manoa-cps-halagao-perillo-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"five people standing in a line\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-210550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/manoa-cps-halagao-perillo-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/manoa-cps-halagao-perillo-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/manoa-cps-halagao-perillo-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-210550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guest lecture at Ateneo de Manila University. (Photo credit: Ateneo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At Ateneo de Manila University, the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa duo shared their vision for <abbr>CPS<\/abbr> and upcoming projects, including the center\u2019s 50th anniversary celebration in 2025, which will culminate in the first Filipino-centered mainstage production at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/kennedy-theatre\/\">Kennedy Theatre<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>Perillo moderated and presented in a panel on Filipino identity in performance, sports and travel writing, showcasing his research on Filipino dance communities in Hong Kong, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Artists and everyday migrants dance to mitigate the negative impacts of Filipino migration like anxiety, loss, and disconnection and embody Filipino migratory states of being and belonging as sources of genuine Filipino identity,&ldquo; Perillo said.<\/p>\n<p>Halagao focused on making Philippine Studies more accessible to K&#8211;12 teachers. She also visited <abbr>UP<\/abbr> Diliman Integrated School and the Raya School, both committed to fostering Filipino identity in education.<\/p>\n<p>At <abbr>CPS<\/abbr>, Halagao is leading a professional development program through the <a href=\"https:\/\/filameducation.com\/home\/\">Sistan Alhambra Filipino American Education Institute<\/a>.
