(Happy Hawaiian Language Month!)<\/p>\n<p>Pepeluali (February) in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> has become synonymous with the Hawaiian language. You may have attended a festival or a concert this month where you heard people speaking in Hawaiian. The State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is one of three states that have o\ufb03cially recognized languages besides English. (The other two being South Dakota and Alaska.)<\/p>\n<p>Here is a timeline of significant milestones in Hawaiian language in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, with key events related to the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> System.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1820: Introduction of Written Hawaiian<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protestant missionaries introduced the Latin alphabet to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, creating the foundation for written Hawaiian. This marks the beginning of Hawaiian language preservation in a written form. Citation: <a href=\"https:\/\/missionhouses.org\/\">Hawaiian Mission Houses<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1834: First Hawaiian-Language Newspaper Published<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \ufb01rst Hawaiian-language newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amdigital.co.uk\/insights\/blog\/hawaiian-language-newspapers\"><em>Ka Hoku o ka Pakipika<\/em><\/a>, was published. It helped promote literacy in Hawaiian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1896: Language Ban in Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Republic of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> passed Act 57, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/TeachingAndLearning\/StudentLearning\/HawaiianEducation\/Pages\/History-of-the-Hawaiian-Education-program.aspx\">English-only law that banned Hawaiian<\/a> as a medium of instruction in public schools. This marked the beginning of a signi\ufb01cant decline in the use of Hawaiian.<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1919: The Hawaiian Dictionary Published<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1919, Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel Elbert published <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/hawaiian-dictionary-hawaiian-english-english-hawaiian-revised-and-enlarged-edition\/\"><em>Hawaiian Dictionary<\/em><\/a> in the \ufb01rst comprehensive dictionary of the Hawaiian language. It was republished several times with a revised and enlarged edition published in 1991.<\/li>\n<li>Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel Elbert published <em>Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English English-Hawaiian<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Press<\/a>), the first comprehensive dictionary of the Hawaiian language.
