(Photo credit: PISCES)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pacificspacecenter.com\/\">Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (<abbr>PISCES<\/abbr>)<\/a> at University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo is hosting the ninth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/pacificspacecenter.com\/education\/stars\/\">Women\u2019s <abbr>STARS<\/abbr> (<abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Aerospace Research Scholars) Program<\/a> this summer. The free, hands-on program invites high school girls passionate about science, technology, engineering and math (<abbr>STEM<\/abbr>) to explore career pathways and gain inspiration for future studies in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields.<\/p>\n<p>The weeklong residential <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> program runs from June 15 to 21 on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island and is open to incoming freshmen through graduating seniors. (Photo credit: PISCES)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since its launch in 2014, <abbr>STARS<\/abbr> has reached more than 80 young women from schools across the state. Many have gone on to study <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields and land careers in science and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Nagasako attended <abbr>STARS<\/abbr> in 2018 while she was a student at McKinley High School. She went on to earn a <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in physics and astronomy and is now a telescope operator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfht.hawaii.edu\/\">Canada-France-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Telescope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>STARS<\/abbr> is open to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> high school girls ages 14 and up and is offered at no cost to participants. Meals, accommodations, and on-island transportation are all covered.
