  {"id":2130,"date":"2011-12-08T14:29:32","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T00:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=2130"},"modified":"2021-05-26T11:54:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T21:54:22","slug":"electric-vehicle-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2011\/12\/08\/electric-vehicle-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Maui College leads electric vehicle alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_2429\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2429\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/maui.car_.jpg\" alt=\"People looking at an electric vehicle\" width=\"620\" height=\"347\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/maui.car_.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/maui.car_-260x145.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first Chevy Volt to arrive on Maui is on display for the launch of the Maui Electric Vehicle Alliance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maui.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Maui College<\/a> is spearheading a cooperative effort on Maui that aims to make the island a green energy model for electric vehicles and smart grids.<\/p>\n<p>A consortium including <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College, <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Energy Office<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulucleancities.org\/\">Honolulu Clean Cities<\/a> and 30 other <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> government, business and organization partners recently launched the <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/eva\/home\/\">Maui Electric Vehicle Alliance<\/a> (Maui <abbr title=\"Electric Vehicle Alliance\">EVA<\/abbr>), which will create an overall county-wide plan and infrastructure for the adoption of electric vehicles (<abbr>EVs<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was seeded with a $300,000 grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Energy<\/a> as part of its <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/articles\/awards-advanced-vehicle-development\">Clean Cities Initiative Awards<\/a>. The grant was given to <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College, in partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.gov\/dbedt\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism<\/a>, to prepare Maui for the widespread adoption of <abbr title=\"electric vehicles\">EVs<\/abbr>. <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College was the only college or university that received a community planning grant in this initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The college will play a critical role in preparing the workforce needed to sustain this effort by training auto repair technicians as well as electricians, contractors, engineers and managers through its Sustainable Construction, Trade Apprenticeship, <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/engt\/?page_id=2\">Engineering Technology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/ssm\/?page_id=2\">Sustainable Science Management<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This grant fits with the college&#8217;s goals of providing leadership in sustainable solutions for island-based economies,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College Chancellor <strong>Clyde Sakamoto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative coincides with other energy projects that the college is implementing, including a recently-signed contract with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnsoncontrols.com\">Johnson Controls<\/a> to install a campus-wide energy management system, create an energy efficient chilling plant, and retrofit the campus buildings to improve energy use. There are also plans to cover part of the college&#8217;s large parking lot with solar carports, some equipped with electric vehicle charging stations.<\/p>\n<p>The connection to renewable energy is key for the project because the goal is not just to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles, which would only mean exchanging where the fuel is burned from the combustible engine to the central energy plant, but to power the vehicles through renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Partners in the Maui <abbr>EVA<\/abbr> include car rental companies and auto dealers, resort hotels, utility companies, local and state environmental agencies, organizations with large vehicle fleets and renewable energy producers. In addition, the college will be consulting with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsd.edu\/\">University of California, San Diego<\/a>, and San Diego Regional Clean Fuels Coalition, which have been national leaders in developing renewable energy resources, innovative policies and studies on consumer use of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Developing the infrastructure for electric vehicle use will also help drive the green economic engine for Maui County. Once the infrastructure for advanced charging stations is built, charging stations will require maintenance and technical support, creating even more &ldquo;green&rdquo; jobs. According to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Energy Office, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is among the top three in the nation for green job growth.
