The show featured a diverse array of work&#8212;drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, and two- and three-dimensional design.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_215511\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215511\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-koa-gallery-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"artist and her drawing\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-215511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-koa-gallery-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-koa-gallery-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-koa-gallery-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sophia Villalobos, self-portrait drawing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;My self-portrait is inspired by natural distortion in the real world&#8212;from feelings that distort our perception or real objects, like glass that distorts our features,&rdquo; said Sophia Villalobos, whose drawing explored emotion and perception.<\/p>\n<p>Ceramics student Arthur Kastler shared <em>Orpheus Planter<\/em>, a piece rich with personal and artistic influences.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This piece is inspired by works of Clara Holt, a ceramics artist in Italy, who makes a lot of classically inspired pieces with the sgraffito technique,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Though just beginning in ceramics, I have drawn all my life, which probably attracted me to sgraffito. I wanted to show the beauty in everyday objects,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I hope it encourages others to take artistic risks.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Carl Jennings, a professor of arts and humanities, emphasized the exhibition\u2019s broader value.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These works represent first steps.
