Nicole Lowen and State <abbr title=\"Senator\">Sen<\/abbr>. Mike Gabbard&#8212;was drafted by students Elijah Warren, Mehana Kapoi and Emily Werner, alongside their mentors James McCallen and Elizabeth Kiefer, as part of their capstone project through the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/is\/\">interdisciplinary studies<\/a>&#8211;sustainability program. McCallen is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiphi.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Public Health Institute<\/a> and Kiefer is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. It\u2019s not something just in the future or happening in other places, it\u2019s happening here, and it\u2019s happening now. We\u2019ve already seen it here in things such as heat waves, water contamination and natural disasters that have been exacerbated by climate change, and then the mental health impacts that have been occurring from those events.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My hope is that this resolution will create a sense of urgency to understand and prepare for the health impacts of climate change, and to encourage the cross-sector collaboration that will be needed to deal with this effectively,&rdquo; Lowen said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> continues to lead the charge when it comes to climate change&#8212;first with <abbr title=\"Senate Concurrent Resolution\">SCR<\/abbr> 44, making us the first state in the nation to declare a climate emergency, and now with <abbr>SCR<\/abbr> 111, recognizing the serious health impacts too,&rdquo; Gabbard said. &ldquo;The climate crisis isn\u2019t just about sea-level rise&#8212;it\u2019s about wildfire risks, air quality, disease and community resilience. Elizabeth Kiefer for their leadership in expanding our approach to climate action. Together, we\u2019re building a safer, healthier future for us all.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Staying persistent&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>The effort was not without resistance. During hearings, students received criticism from some lawmakers and community members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We got quite a bit of pushback from some of the representatives within that hearing after we had given our testimony,&rdquo; Werner said. &ldquo;We were told that we were stretching the definition of a public health emergency to include climate change, and it waters down the urgency of actual public health emergencies, such as fentanyl or crime. However, climate change will only make these problems worse.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;How we overcame that was just staying persistent&#8212;showing up for hearings, continuing to give testimony and staying true to our mission&#8212;because all of our research was all based on complete facts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>McCallen and Kiefer said, &ldquo;Watching Emily, Mehana and Eli grow into powerful climate-health advocates was the highlight of this session.
