I got my <abbr>GED<\/abbr> in 2005 and thought that was enough,&rdquo; Ako said. &ldquo;I didn\u2019t have the support back then to follow through with anything. But now, with the support I have, I\u2019ve proven to myself that I can finish what I start.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Honestly, I feel like this program chose me.<br \/>&#8212;Melanie Ako<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ako enrolled at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> in fall 2024 while working full time at 7-Eleven in M\u0101kaha, raising four children&#8212;the youngest in fourth grade&#8212; and caring for her family. She discovered the Community Health Worker (<abbr>CHW<\/abbr>) program during a telehealth visit at <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast Comprehensive Health Center (<abbr>WCCHC<\/abbr>) and was immediately drawn to it.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It just spoke to me. Honestly, I feel like this program chose me,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">Meet more amazing <abbr>¶«¾«Ó°Òµ<\/abbr> spring graduates<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Connecting with coursework, community<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> program trains students to become trusted connectors between healthcare systems and underserved communities. Ako\u2019s practicum at <abbr>WCCHC<\/abbr> allowed her to engage in meaningful work&#8212;conducting outreach, shadowing case managers and coordinating events for k\u016bpuna.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216017\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-commencement-spring-2025-ako-melanie-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"2 women in an office\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-216017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-commencement-spring-2025-ako-melanie-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-commencement-spring-2025-ako-melanie-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kapiolani-commencement-spring-2025-ako-melanie-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-216017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melanie Ako with fellow <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> student Juanita<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;These experiences were so valuable,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;They helped me grow professionally and gave me a purpose in serving my community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While the program was mostly online, Ako found a deep connection with her coursework and instructors. She credits Phoebe Hwang, assistant professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>, with helping her stay motivated.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Phoebe is amazing,&rdquo; Ako said. &ldquo;Her lessons and assignments were thoughtful and made the material feel applicable to real life. She really helped me build confidence in myself.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Strong commitment to serving<\/h2>\n<p>Hwang said: &ldquo;I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of having Melanie in two <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> courses. Despite not having been in a traditional academic setting in a while, having to care for her children and family members, while working full time, she performed exceptionally well.
