While he planned to attend the John A. Burns School of Medicine, he began questioning if he was on the right path.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_217242\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217242\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/alumni-nishida-e-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Nishida smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-217242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/alumni-nishida-e-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/alumni-nishida-e-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/alumni-nishida-e.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-217242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Evan Nishida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That summer, Nishida tried an internship with Island Wealth Management, a local firm that focuses on multi-generational financial planning and asset management. It was there that he discovered his passion for financial planning, leading him to shift his academic and career plans.<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Don\u02bbt try to do it alone&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;I leaned heavily on my counselors as sounding boards while planning out my semesters,&rdquo; Nishida said. &ldquo;My best advice? Don\u2019t try to do it alone&#8212;reach out, ask questions and seek guidance.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in biology from the College of Natural Sciences in 2023, all while completing finance certifications online. Today, Nishida is a full-time financial consultant at Island Wealth Management.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Seeing the meaningful impact we can create in the lives of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s local families by turning complex financial decisions into clear, actionable strategies is what continues to drive our team every day,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<h2>Grateful for support<\/h2>\n<p>Choosing <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa came naturally for Nishida, a fourth-generation alumnus. But family legacy wasn\u2019t the only factor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was fortunate enough to be awarded the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Chancellor\u2019s Scholarship, the M\u0101noa Opportunity Grant and the <abbr>AS东精影业<\/abbr> Scholarship&#8212;all of which significantly reduced the financial burden on my family,&rdquo; Nishida said. &ldquo;Thanks to that support, I was able to pursue my degree without needing to take out student loans&#8212;an opportunity I remain incredibly grateful for.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Building trust<\/h2>\n<p>As a student, one piece of advice stuck with him and continues to shape his career: people don\u2019t care how much you know until they know how much you care.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That captures what makes working in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> unique,&rdquo; Nishida said. &ldquo;Being the smartest person in the room means nothing if people can\u2019t trust or connect with you.
