The week wrapped with a high-pressure market basket challenge using mystery ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up, I\u2019ve always liked to bake and find new recipes,\u201d said Kailea Young, a senior at Kailua High School. \u201cThis experience has made me want to explore further into the culinary arts career pathway. After I graduate, I plan to attend <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi\u02bbolani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Workforce development, discovering passions<\/h2>\n<div style=\"float:right;clear:right;margin:0 0 0 15px;\"><figure id=\"attachment_218522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218522\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kapiolani-cip-high-school-3-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Culinary student shows off his work\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-218522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kapiolani-cip-high-school-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kapiolani-cip-high-school-3-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kapiolani-cip-high-school-3.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-218522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landon-Roe Cruz<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>The program was delivered in partnership with the Culinary Institute of America (<abbr>CIA<\/abbr>) and builds upon the success of previous <abbr>CIP<\/abbr> and <abbr>CIA<\/abbr> cohorts, which have primarily served working professionals seeking to refine their craft. Offering it to high school students reflects <abbr>CIP<\/abbr>\u2019s growing role in workforce development.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Takehara, a Moanalua High School graduate who will attend <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi\u02bbolani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> this fall, appreciated learning about local food systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learned how to cook, but we also learned the ins and outs of where we source our ingredients,\u201d Takehara said. \u201cIt\u2019s really cool to see how intertwined every aspect of the kitchen is with every part of the island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent McKinley High School graduate Landon-Roe Cruz had been interested in engineering, but discovered a passion for cooking in his junior year, and will also attend <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi\u02bbolani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis experience forced me to step up and be a leader,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cThis week, I\u2019ve been trying to lead my team through the recipes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students came from 13 public and charter schools statewide, including Moanalua, Kailua, McKinley, Mililani and Kihei Charter.
