(Drone footage credit: Kahiau Cates)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;If proven, this deep water could explain long-standing mysteries about <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island\u2019s water cycle&#8212;namely, why observed coastal discharge doesn\u2019t match estimated groundwater recharge,&rdquo; said Peter Kannberg, associate researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/research\/org\/units\/hawaii-institute-of-geophysics-and-planetology-higp\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a> (<abbr>HIGP<\/abbr>) in the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, who led the survey. &ldquo;In simple terms, a lot of water is missing from current models.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The roots of this investigation trace back to 2018, when scientists first detected anomalies suggesting a deep, confined aquifer where none should exist. Their theory? Instruments were deployed on the seafloor to listen for electromagnetic echoes, while a 150-foot-long towed sensor emitted a low-power signal that is recorded on a 3,300-foot-long receiver array.
