  {"id":220868,"date":"2025-08-25T16:06:36","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T02:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=220868"},"modified":"2025-08-25T16:06:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T02:06:36","slug":"150k-mellon-award-kaohipohaku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/08\/25\/150k-mellon-award-kaohipohaku\/","title":{"rendered":"$150K Mellon award helps <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> protect Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s fragile social media history"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_220876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-220876\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/west-oahu-mellon-kukulu-exhibit.jpg\" alt=\"We Are Maunakea over Hawaii flag\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-220876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/west-oahu-mellon-kukulu-exhibit.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/west-oahu-mellon-kukulu-exhibit-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/west-oahu-mellon-kukulu-exhibit-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-220876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A photo submitted by <span aria-label=\"Kaui\">Kau&#699;i<\/span> Merritt for the recent K&#363;kulu exhibit at the UH West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Library.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> has received a $150,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation\u2019s Public Knowledge program to plan for a social media archive that preserves <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> digital history and centers on Native Hawaiian voices.<\/p>\n<p>The project, <span aria-label=\"Kaohipohaku\">Ka&#699;ohip&#333;haku<\/span> (gathering rocks or stones), is a collaboration between the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> James &#038; Abigail Campbell Library, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College library and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Kaohipohaku\">Ka&#699;ohip&#333;haku<\/span> will bring together Native Hawaiian activists and web\/social media archivists to start the discussion on what a social media archive, rooted in <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land) and guided by the l\u0101hui <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (Hawaiian Nation), could look like,&rdquo; said principal investigator Kawena Komeiji, Hawaiian Initiatives librarian at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Hamilton Library and the former Hawaiian Pacific resources librarian at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Komeiji said the effort rebalances how history is preserved, and is significant to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> and the broader <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It aims to put mana (power, authority, privilege) and ea (sovereignty, independence) back into the hands of the Native Hawaiian community.
