K\u012bpaepae translates to &ldquo;stepping stones&rdquo; and are traditional Native Hawaiian ceremonies of welcome. Led by Hawaiian studies lecturer Dane &ldquo;Malu&rdquo; Dudoit, traditional chants, pahu drums and p\u016b (conch shells) set the tone of aloha <span aria-label=\"\u0101ina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span>\u2014respect for the land and people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_220951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-220951\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/hilo-humanities-conference2-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"Steering committee: Conference planning committee\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-220951\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/hilo-humanities-conference2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/hilo-humanities-conference2-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/hilo-humanities-conference2.jpeg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-220951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steering committee: Conference planning committee<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Workshops invited participants to engage directly with Native Hawaiian cultural practices, while an alohawear exhibition at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/library\/\"><span aria-label=\"Mookini\">Mo&#699;okini<\/span> Library<\/a> highlighted the history of fashion in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are thrilled to be able to showcase vintage <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> fashion as part of the conference,&rdquo; said English professor and member of the conference planning committee Leanne Day. &ldquo;I am excited how the exhibit indexes <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s history and helps center how fashion is a critical site of reckoning with settler colonialism, immigration and tourism.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p>The four plenary speakers at the conference were all connected to the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span>: Manu Meyer, former <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo education professor and now director of <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/hihh\/\">Indigenous education<\/a> at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>; Marianne Takamiya, a <a href=\"https:\/\/astro.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">physics and astronomy<\/a> professor; Jacquelyn Pualani Johnson, emeritus professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/performingarts\/drama.php\">drama<\/a>;
