(Photo credit: <abbr>DLNR<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students and faculty from the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa and <span lang=\u201chaw\u201d>Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College joined forces with the <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Land and Natural Resources (<abbr>DLNR<\/abbr>) and community partners for the 9\/11 Day of Service. The national initiative encourages Americans each September 11 to engage in acts of kindness and service, reflecting the unity that emerged in the aftermath of the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think 9\/11 affected everybody in different ways, and how we deal with that can really affect your well-being,&rdquo; said Denise Pierson, <span lang=\"haw\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> civic and community engagement coordinator. &ldquo;If we can get them to look at it not as a negative thing in their life, but let\u2019s do something positive around that, maybe it\u2019ll change their attitude about it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Coming together to do good<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222074\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-911-day-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people picking up trash from the bushes\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-222074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-911-day-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-911-day-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-911-day-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers cleaned and beautified the beach park.
