(Photo credit: Jim Wiseman)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>University of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa Associate Professor Diane Ragone has been recognized for her global leadership in advocating for <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ulu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Awarded by the National Tropical Botanical Garden (<abbr>NTGB<\/abbr>), the Fairchild Medal honors her four decades of work in increasing the understanding, conservation and use of <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ulu<\/span>, a food source in <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and throughout the Pacific Rim. Her fieldwork has reached across 51 islands, including Pohnpei, Fiji, Samoa and the Hawaiian Islands, where she documented and collected material from more than 600 trees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-2-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person with plants\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-223698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-2-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-2.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During Ragone&#8217;s travels, she interviewed hundreds of local communities, farmers and cultural practitioners, recording invaluable knowledge about the use of these essential cultivars.<\/p>\n<h2>Roots in <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p>Ragone&#8217;s connection to <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8216;s agricultural heritage began with earning master&#8217;s and doctoral degrees in horticulture from <abbr>¶«¾«Ó°Òµ<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. She is an associate professor in the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>), and was named the college&#8217;s outstanding alumna in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The support and encouragement I received from my professors, the staff, and my fellow students in <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> and other programs, such as Pacific Islands Studies, were critical to my breadfruit journey,&rdquo; Ragone said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-3-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person mashing ulu\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-223697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-3-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-ctahr-ulu-pioneer-3.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Global center for <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ulu<\/span> research<\/h2>\n<p>Another major contribution from Ragone was founding the Breadfruit Institute at <abbr>NTBG<\/abbr> in 2003 and leading the program until 2022. Under her direction, the institute created the world&#8217;s largest repository of breadfruit cultivars, a living conservation collection of 150 varieties housed in <abbr>NTBG<\/abbr>&#8216;s gardens.
