Held at the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City, the workshop taught people how to harvest, save and share seeds.<\/p>\n<p>This event is part of how the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>) is advancing community food self-sufficiency through home gardening workshops.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_224884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224884\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"hands with seeds in them\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-224884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-224884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants learned how to carefully separate seeds from dried plants and save them for later plantings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;One key lesson was to regularly change the types of fruits and vegetables growing in their home gardens,&rdquo; said <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> extension agent Julia Avila. &ldquo;This keeps garden soil healthy, so people will always have a fresh crop growing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Seeds developed by <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>, such as Komohana grape tomato, <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> sweet basil and Poamoho pole bean, are easier to care for because they were bred to resist several plant diseases. Other crops, such as the M\u0101noa lettuce, can thrive in hotter climates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Around 1,000 seeds were shared across the eight <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> crops at the workshop,&rdquo; said <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> extension agent Jensen Uyeda.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_224883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224883\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"note with instructions\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-224883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-seed-sharing-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-224883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seeds of M&#257;noa lettuce will grow and thrive in hotter temperatures and resist several common plant diseases.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bok Choy Open House drew more than 50 people, eager to learn how to grow bok choy. The event organizers shared valuable advice on growing the nutritious leafy green, covering topics from exploring best-adapted varieties and effective fertilization to pest control and hydroponics.<\/p>\n<p>This effort expands local knowledge and enthusiasm for making healthy food choices, a key step toward increasing community food security and self-sufficiency. It&#8217;s the latest in a series of workshops from <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> to help families grow their own food to become more food secure.
