For <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College\u2019s Blake Pena\u2011Perez, that support was the difference between hunger and hope.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There were days I didn\u2019t know what I\u2019d eat,&rdquo; said Pena-Perez, a first-generation freshman and recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhfoundation.org\/impact\/students\/meeting-them-where-they-are-how-elama-scholarship-lifeline-students\">\u0112lama and Hilo One<\/a> (pronounced O-nay) scholarships. &ldquo;That kind of stress takes over your whole life. The \u0112lama scholarship reminded me that I\u2019m not alone&#8212;that there are people out there who truly care about students like me.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Combating food insecurity and barriers<\/h2>\n<p>At <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo, a $1-million gift established the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhfoundation.org\/news\/new-endowment-uh-hilo-helps-students-facing-financial-challenges\">Kruschel Endowment to Reduce Insecurity<\/a>, addressing rising concerns about student housing, food and financial instability. Student Reshmi Rao is a brain aneurysm survivor who is pursuing nursing to honor her late sister.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Receiving this scholarship has lifted such a huge weight off my shoulders,&rdquo; Rao said. &ldquo;It\u2019s given me hope. On <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Giving Day, more than 1,800 gifts raised more than $800,000, uniting alumni and friends from across <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Donor generosity is also advancing research and innovation statewide.
