M. Keck Observatory, Canada-France-<span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Telescope, Subaru Telescope and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> Infrared Telescope Facility guided diplomats through observatory facilities. <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> astronomy consistently ranks number one in the world in science impact and output.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_234728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-234728\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group of people welcoming visitors\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-234728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-234728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Center for Maunakea Stewardship staff welcomed visitors with cultural protocol.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At Halep\u014dhaku, located within Maunakea\u2019s mid-level elevation, the group was welcomed with oli (chant) and cultural protocol led by staff from the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/\">Center for Maunakea Stewardship<\/a> (<abbr>CMS<\/abbr>). The welcome offered diplomats an introduction to the cultural significance of the mauna (mountain) before continuing their visit.<\/p>\n<p>Staff also shared the mountain\u2019s environmental and cultural significance, restoration projects and ongoing stewardship work. Diplomats learned about <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u2019s continued efforts to responsibly decommission telescopes as part of its long-term stewardship commitments.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our responsibility is to care for this mauna thoughtfully and respectfully,&rdquo; said Greg Chun, executive director of <abbr>CMS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;Stewardship guides every part of the work happening on Maunakea, from protecting natural and cultural resources to supporting world-class science.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Cultural connections<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_234726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-234726\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Imiloa Astronomy Center exhibit\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-234726\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/system-diplomats-experience-maunakea-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-234726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diplomats got a firsthand look at Polynesian wayfinding at \u02bbImiloa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The visit also included a stop at <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span>, where diplomats were welcomed with Hawaiian chant and lei. Staff and students led them through an engaging exploration of Polynesian wayfinding and navigation.
