  {"id":25015,"date":"2014-05-27T16:05:34","date_gmt":"2014-05-28T02:05:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=25015"},"modified":"2021-10-29T14:36:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T00:36:14","slug":"aquaponics-and-education-define-award-winning-west-oahu-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/05\/27\/aquaponics-and-education-define-award-winning-west-oahu-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Aquaponics and education define award-winning West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O\u02bbahu<\/span> project"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_25006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25006\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/hooulu-plants.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"214\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/hooulu-plants.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/hooulu-plants-260x139.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using a backyard aquaponics setup to grow taro, or kalo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Helping families in the Pacific Islands mitigate the high cost of imported food and maintain healthy eating habits is the goal of an award-winning social enterprise agricultural project developed by a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8212;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> team, <span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>The group recently won the $12,000 first place prize in Chaminade University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chaminade.edu\/hogan\/hogan-7.php\">Hogan Entrepreneurs Non-Profit Business Plan Competition<\/a> as well as $25,000 as finalists in the national <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agprize.com\/\">Agricultural Innovation Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Assistant Professor of Business Administration Keith Sakuda and <span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> Pacific team members Ilima Ho-Lastimosa (<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/\">School of Social Work<\/a> graduate student) and David Walfish (<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student) created Waim&#257;nalo Aquaponics.<\/p>\n<p>Waim&#257;nalo Aquaponics teaches backyard aquaponics (soilless farming) and best practices for distributing the agricultural bounty, enabling families to grow their own vegetables and fish and creating affordable and healthy food options that reduce the high rates of obesity and diabetes prevalent in Pacific Island communities. The project also partners with community organizations to offer counseling, nutrition education and entrepreneurial guidance.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Projects like these are what make the university great,&rdquo; said Chancellor Rockne Freitas. &ldquo;We are so proud of our <span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> Pacific team and their vision for addressing local health and food challenges with a system that has the potential to improve the health and well-being of people all over the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Agricultural Innovation Prize was a wonderful opportunity for our team to share our vision of a scalable solution for food security in the Pacific Islands,&rdquo; said Sakuda. &ldquo;Success at Chaminade&#8217;s non-profit competition was important to us because it was recognition that came from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community.
