{"id":25422,"date":"2014-06-20T11:52:21","date_gmt":"2014-06-20T21:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=25422"},"modified":"2021-10-29T13:32:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T23:32:14","slug":"uh-manoa-provides-disaster-risk-reduction-training-in-indonesia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/06\/20\/uh-manoa-provides-disaster-risk-reduction-training-in-indonesia\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa provides disaster risk reduction training in Indonesia"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_26174\"  width=\"620\" height=\"349\"  data-origwidth=\"620\" data-origheight=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T89zN6A7sGk?enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;disablekb=0&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"Indonesia USAID\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-top:20px;\">A team of faculty and graduate students from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> is delivering workshops during June at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itb.ac.id\/en\/\">Bandung Institute of Technology<\/a> to emergency managers, first responders and others working on disaster risk reduction in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Building upon programs within the College of Social Sciences&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.durp.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a> and its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.durp.hawaii.edu\/Disaster%20Management.html\">Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance Program<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ndptc.hawaii.edu\/\">National Disaster Preparedness Training Center<\/a>, the training is covering disaster management, risk reduction, recovery from disasters, climate adaptation and strategies for building community resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Professor <strong>Karl Kim<\/strong> and Associate Professor <strong>Dolores Foley<\/strong> of the urban and regional planning department, along with faculty from the Bandung Institute of Technology, the week-long course, titled Learning from Disasters: Perspectives from the U.S. and Indonesia, provides participants with insights into international best practices in the field of disaster science.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia, comprised of approximately 17,500 islands, is the largest country in Southeast Asia. It is situated at a major juncture of the earth&#8217;s tectonic plates and is home to over 100 active volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We value the partnership, exchange and commitment to build resilient communities through training, education and research,&rdquo; said Wilmar Salim, head of Bandung Institute of Technology&#8217;s urban planning program. &ldquo;Indonesia has seen numerous natural hazards in recent years. This, plus increased urbanization and greater exposure to flooding, volcanoes, earthquakes and other hazards, has greatly increased the country&#8217;s need for training that integrates hazard mitigation and urban planning.
