{"id":27216,"date":"2014-09-02T16:14:15","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T02:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=27216"},"modified":"2021-10-27T14:07:53","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T00:07:53","slug":"98-6-million-raised-to-support-university-of-hawaii-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/09\/02\/98-6-million-raised-to-support-university-of-hawaii-success\/","title":{"rendered":"$98.6 million raised to support University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> success"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Foundation<\/a> announced that thanks to donors&#8217; generosity, $98,583,866 was raised in fiscal year 2014 (July 1, 2013&#8211;June 30, 2014) to support University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> students, faculty, research and programs on all 10 <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> campuses.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin:0 0 15px 15px;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/26rkz_TkU5Y\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News video<\/strong>: <em>Largest ever private award to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> <br \/>funds microbial oceanography research<\/em>\n<\/div>\n<p>This record-breaking achievement was thanks in large part to the Simons Foundation and its $40 million award to <strong>Edward DeLong<\/strong> and <strong>David Karl<\/strong>, both <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa professors in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, to lead the <a href=\"http:\/\/scope.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (<abbr>SCOPE<\/abbr>)<\/a>. This was the largest private foundation gift <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> has ever received.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On behalf of the students and faculty on all 10 campuses who benefit every day from our donors&#8217; strategic philanthropic investments, mahalo nui loa,&rdquo; said <strong>Donna Vuchinich<\/strong>, president and <abbr>CEO<\/abbr>, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Foundation. She continued, &ldquo;Every day these gifts to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> open doors of opportunity to promising students, fuel meaningful research and innovation, teaching excellence, and programs that enrich our communities in so many ways. We are humbled by our donors&#8217; generosity, and honored to serve as their philanthropic partner, and steward of their legacies.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ronald Ho, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Foundation board chair concluded, &ldquo;We are tremendously grateful to our donors and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> colleagues who are working together to help us address the challenges our state faces, and make the most out of innovation and research opportunities. We look forward to the year ahead, and building on this fundraising momentum to grow critical private support for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s university.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting stats<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of the $58.6 million raised (total without Simons Foundation gift), nearly 60 percent of funds raised came from local <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> corporations, foundations and individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2002, the UH Foundation has raised nearly $700 million to support UH programs and students.<\/li>\n<li>Ninety-nine percent of gifts raised are donor-directed.
