  {"id":27538,"date":"2014-09-15T09:45:08","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T19:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=27538"},"modified":"2021-10-26T13:25:11","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T23:25:11","slug":"21st-century-classroom-design-cultivates-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/09\/15\/21st-century-classroom-design-cultivates-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"21st century classroom design cultivates collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R2U83SqssOY\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There is a new innovation zone in Sakamaki Hall on the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> campus that includes three new classroom spaces&#8212;and these are not your mom and dad&#8217;s college classrooms. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sakamaki-classroom.jpg\" alt=\"students in front of a white board\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sakamaki-classroom.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sakamaki-classroom-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They feature easy-to-move, comfortable, flexible furniture that allows for multiple seating and standing options; walls and walls of white boards and sliding plexiglass surfaces to write on; the latest technologies for content display and sharing; bright rooms filled with natural light, ample outlets and a lot of space to move around.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s really a different kind of space in which you are invited to participate, you&#8217;re invited to be active and the old classroom has really been turned inside out,&rdquo; said <strong>Reed Dasenbrock<\/strong>, the vice chancellor of academic affairs at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the faculty driven designs, the active teacher, passive student model&#8212;a professor lecturing to students seated in rows of fixed seats&#8212;is gone.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The design of this classroom, which is so different, is intended to model what learning really is like,&rdquo; added Dasenbrock. &ldquo;Learning does not take place by sitting and listening to the professor but by the professor designing an environment in which students have to do things.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rod Labrador<\/strong>, an ethnic studies professor at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, agrees. &ldquo;It forces me to be a little more creative in what I am doing,&rdquo; explains Labrador. &ldquo;It forces me to come up with activities that utilize the space. It really forces me to&#8212;to be all clich\u00e9d&#8212;think outside of the box.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The classrooms are designed to easily incorporate group work and collaboration that can be quickly shared and discussed with the entire class.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Working together and using it in class would lead to more of their own grasping and ownership of the material,&rdquo; said <strong>Kaliko Baker<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Hawaiian language instructor.<\/p>\n<p>Students say the new environment fosters better learning.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Personally, I feel like I learn more from discussion and other students&#8217; perspectives,&rdquo; said student <strong>&#256;nuenue Purcell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I learn better talking through things, which this space gives that opportunity,&rdquo; added fellow student <strong>Ruben Campos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why the new classroom spaces were designed with comfort and agility in mind: to be more like a living room or caf\u00e9 instead of a classroom from the 1960s. <\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin:0 0 15px 15px;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9VjOO6DRq_s\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>Related <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News video<\/strong>: <em>New classroom and teaching<br \/> technique tested at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/em>, September 24, 2012\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;The chairs, you can actually sit on the back of the chair,&rdquo; said Campos.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Everyone is a little bit more comfortable and relaxed,&rdquo; said Purcell.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The circular chairs are nice for getting different people to actually speak up in class,&rdquo; said Campos. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They&#8217;re sitting on the ground, others are standing up,&rdquo; said Labrador. &ldquo;It allows them a certain amount of freedom.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all part of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s movement towards agility in education to create more engaged opportunities to teach and learn.
