  {"id":28764,"date":"2014-10-23T17:02:04","date_gmt":"2014-10-24T03:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=28764"},"modified":"2021-10-22T08:40:32","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T18:40:32","slug":"library-preserves-hawaiian-cultural-treasures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/10\/23\/library-preserves-hawaiian-cultural-treasures\/","title":{"rendered":"Library preserves Hawaiian cultural treasures"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D3joPxjtDvI\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A piece of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s history was saved and restored by the preservation department of the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa Hamilton Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kapa is Native Hawaiian fabric made from certain trees and shrubs. Nine kapa moe, used for sleeping or resting, were damaged in the 2011 Japan tsunami. It happened while the kapa, that dates back as far as the 1860s, was in storage at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huliheepalace.net\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hulihee\">Hulihe&#699;e<\/span> Palace<\/a> in Kailua-Kona on the island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They are all different and they all sort of represent a broad period of Hawaiian kapa making in the 19th century,&rdquo; explained <strong>Lynn Davis<\/strong>, librarian and head of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Hamilton Library <a href=\"http:\/\/library.manoa.hawaii.edu\/departments\/preservation\/index.html\">preservation department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/daughtersofhawaii.org\/\">Daughters of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a>, an organization founded in 1903 to preserve the Hawaiian culture, contracted Hamilton Library to restore the kapa. The kapa was kept in a freezer until the project received a grant from <abbr>FEMA<\/abbr>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fema.gov\/\">Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a>. The restoration work began in 2014 and lasted six weeks. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Mainly, we looked at where it was weakest,&rdquo; said Davis. &ldquo;We&#8217;ve done mends to be sure that it doesn&#8217;t break down more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/kapa.jpg\" alt=\"kapa\" width=\"425\" height=\"283\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/kapa.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/kapa-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fittingly, the restored kapa was first presented at the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/hookele\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hookele Naauao\">Ho&#699;okele Na&#699;auao<\/span> Librarianship Symposium<\/a> that aims to promote Hawaiian librarianship and its importance in preserving the Hawaiian culture. <\/p>\n<p>One of the kapa on display belonged to Hawaiian royalty, the family of Princess Ruth <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The kapa represents many things to us,&rdquo; said <strong>Kauwela Valeho-Novikoff<\/strong>, a librarian at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>. &ldquo;It&#8217;s a cultural expression, it&#8217;s our tradition, it&#8217;s our <span aria-label=\"alii\">ali&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s kapa. And it brings with it a lot of mana.
