The bright yellow buoy is located more than three miles offshore and streams data on ocean and wave conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The buoy joins the existing <a href=\"http:\/\/oos.soest.hawaii.edu\/pacioos\/wavebuoy\/\"><abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> network of 13 real-time wave buoys<\/a> across the Pacific, providing data on wave height, direction, period and sea surface temperature. <abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> also redeployed wave buoys in Hilo Bay, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Kaumalapau Harbor, <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L\u0101na&#699;i<\/span>, after they cut loose a few months ago.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More UH News stories on PacIOOS buoys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>July 10, 2014: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/07\/10\/wave-buoy-in-majuro-helps-keep-islanders-safe\/\">&ldquo;Wave buoy in Majuro helps keep islanders safe,&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>October 11, 2013: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/10\/11\/wave-buoy-off-kauai-will-impact-surf-forecasts-and-maritime-transit\/\">&ldquo;Wave buoy off Kauai will impact surf forecasts and maritime transit,&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>December 13, 2011: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2011\/12\/13\/maui-wave-buoy\/\">&ldquo;New wave buoy deployed in Maui,&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ocean users&#8212;including fishermen, commercial operators, surfers, paddlers and swimmers&#8212;can access <a href=\"http:\/\/oos.soest.hawaii.edu\/pacioos\/wavebuoy\/\">ocean data online<\/a> to make well-informed and safe decisions. Real-time wave data are also vital to prepare the community, emergency responders and county officials for big wave events that could potentially impact shorelines.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> serves real-time wave data from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, the Mariana and Marshall Islands, as well as American S&#257;moa,&rdquo; says <strong>Melissa Iwamoto<\/strong>, deputy director of <abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;The new wave buoy in American S&#257;moa will compliment our network in the Pacific and will greatly support the decision-making of various agencies across the Pacific, including the National Weather Service and the National Oceanographic Data Center.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The locations of the buoys are included on navigational charts.
