There, he read archival information about corded <span aria-label=\"pau\">p&#257;&#699;&#363;<\/span>, which are ritual corded skirts found on <span aria-label=\"kii\">ki&#699;i<\/span>, or carved images.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My 17-year-old mind was intrigued by something I&#8217;d never seen&#8212;the photo with the <span aria-label=\"kii\">ki&#699;i<\/span> with the <span aria-label=\"pau\">p&#257;&#699;&#363;<\/span>. Now that I&#8217;m 51, I&#8217;ve finally arrived at a point in my life where I was able not just to recreate that but to innovate that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The results of Tangar&#333;&#8217;s innovations are on display at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. Corded skirts, <span aria-label=\"kokopuupuu\">k&#333;k&#333;pu&#699;upu&#699;u<\/span> (traditional knotted carrying nets), large photos, corded sashes and other unique types of regalia decorate the exhibition space in <span aria-label=\"Piopio\">Pi&#699;opi&#699;o<\/span> Hale.<\/p>\n<h2>Introducing old practices in a new light<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29906\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/kokopuupuu.jpg\" alt=\"knotted carrying nets\" width=\"250\" height=\"374\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/kokopuupuu.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/kokopuupuu-173x260.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo scholar in residence <span aria-label=\"Kealii\">Keali&#699;i<\/span> Reichel created <span aria-label=\"kokopuupuu\">k&#333;k&#333;pu&#699;upu&#699;u<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reichel, who is a scholar in residence at the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, collaborated on the exhibit and made the <span aria-label=\"kokopuupuu\">k&#333;k&#333;pu&#699;upu&#699;u<\/span>. An expert in traditional knotting, Reichel taught Tangar&#333; the ancient technique.
