The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Mānoa’s Lyon Arboretum<\/a> announces a series of budding workshops that are sure to bring out the green thumb in workshop participants and arboretum goers alike.<\/p>\n

Designing and Planting Small-scale Succulent Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n

A succulent garden can grow in any kind of container with good drainage. Seashells, baskets, rocks, old lunch boxes and teacups all make for unique planters. Led by workshop instructor Liz Keller, participants are asked to bring in unusual bases or containers (no larger than a 8 inch pie pan). Potting supplies (cinders and potting mix) are included in the class supply fee. A selection of small succulents for small gardens will be available for purchase after the demonstration, but participants are also welcome to bring their own succulents to plant.<\/p>\n

The workshop will take place on January 9, 9:30–11:30 a.m. The supply fee is $15 + $5.<\/p>\n

Supermarket Flower Design<\/strong><\/p>\n

Flower design artist Dottie Nitta will demonstrate how you can personalize flowers purchased at the grocery story by arranging bouquets for any occasion. Use them to brighten up your home or for a colorful bouquet to present to a friend. Following Nitta’s talk and demonstration, participants will be provided with a set of flowers to create their own large tussy mussy bouquet. Participants must bring their own pair of floral clippers.<\/p>\n

The Supermarket Flower Design workshop will take place on Friday, January 23 from 9:30–11:30. The supply fee is $15 + $5.<\/p>\n

Through the Lens: A Focus on Botanical Photography<\/strong><\/p>\n

Learn how the essential elements of photography can help you compose stronger botanical images with your point and shoot camera. In this hands-on class, professional photographer Hawkins Biggins will discuss tips to create powerful images and will provide time in the garden to practice photography. Participants must bring their own point and shoot camera (have batteries charged and SD<\/abbr> cards ready to explore botanical photography at Lyon Arboretum.<\/p>\n

The botanical photography workshop will take place on Friday, February 27, 9:30 a.m.–12 p.m. The supply fee is $15.<\/p>\n

Plant Diagnostics and First Aid<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oʻahu<\/span> master gardners Brian and Mehl Cyr will introduce diagnostic techniques to pinpoint plant problems that may be caused by pests, disease, nutrient deficiency and\/or environmental impact. They will also cover what to do to control or mitigate these problems.<\/p>\n

The Plant Diagnostics and First Aid workshop will take place on Friday, March 6, 9:30–11:30. The supply fee is $15.<\/p>\n
