Mizumura&#8217;s historical and theoretical insights into language and translation have relevance for the humanities in general, and especially resonate in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s complex linguistic landscape. The book has become a national bestseller upon its release in Japan, and received the prestigious Kobayashi Hideo Prize.<\/p>\n<h2>Event Details<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wednesday, April 22, 12&#8211;1:15 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>\u2028<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\">East-West Center<\/a>, Burns Hall 2118<br \/>\n\u2028Mizumura will speak at a seminar for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa graduate students and faculty as part of the International Cultural Studies Speaker Series. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Friday, April 24, 4&#8211;6 p.m.<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/korea\/\">\u2028Center for Korean Studies<\/a> Auditorium<br \/>\n\u2028At this free public symposium, Mizumura will read from the <em>Nihongo ga horobiru toki<\/em> translation. A guest panel composed of Juliet Winters Carpenter (Doshisha Women&#8217;s College of Liberal Arts), <strong>Shoichi Iwasaki<\/strong> (<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures), <strong>Brandy N&#257;lani McDougall<\/strong> (<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Department of American studies)\u00a0and <strongb>Nathalie Segeral (<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa College of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas) will engage in discussion.<\/strongb><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mizumura&#8217;s visit was planned by <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u00a0American Studies Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariyoshihara.com\/\"><strong>Mari Yoshihara<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0who translated the book into English with Juliet Winters Carpenter, and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa East Asian Langauges and Literatures Professor <strong>Ken Ito<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>More on Mizumura<\/h2>\n<p>Mizumura is an award-winning writer of Japanese fiction and cultural criticism. She is renowned for sophisticated rewritings of literature and defying boundaries of language and genre. Her first novel written in 1990, <em>Zoku Meian<\/em> (&ldquo;Light and Dark, Continued&rdquo;), caused a sensation because she dared to complete the work of major canonical writer Natsume S&#333;seki.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Mizumura has subverted other literary forms in works such as <em>Shish&#333;setsu from left to right<\/em>, in which she mounted a bilingual challenge to a genre considered uniquely Japanese. Her <em>Honkaku sh&#333;setsu<\/em>, a novel which reimagines a <em>Wuthering Heights<\/em> set in Japan, has been released in English translation under the title <em>A True Novel<\/em> in 2013.
