  {"id":34319,"date":"2015-05-01T15:57:59","date_gmt":"2015-05-02T01:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=34319"},"modified":"2021-09-13T15:37:41","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T01:37:41","slug":"melanoma-survivors-share-at-uh-cancer-center-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/05\/01\/melanoma-survivors-share-at-uh-cancer-center-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Melanoma survivors share at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ChZhyGov6iI\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>About 400 people in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma or skin cancer this year. <\/p>\n<p>A symposium about melanoma drew a crowd of about 100 to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> to discuss the latest in treatment, research and prevention. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34323\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/manoa-cancer-center-melanoma-symposium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/manoa-cancer-center-melanoma-symposium.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/manoa-cancer-center-melanoma-symposium-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Asinate Vaivela<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Asinate Vaivela, a 21-year-old cancer survivor from Maui was diagnosed with stage-three melanoma in 2011, when she went to the doctor to check out a cyst on the side of her foot. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was just shocked that I had cancer. I didn&#8217;t think that someone young like me would get it,&rdquo; said Vaivela.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium also featured free skin cancer screenings. Melanoma incidence rates have been increasing in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and doctors say early detection and prevention are key. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Shane Morita<\/strong>, an assistant clinical professor at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center, said, &ldquo;Anyone&#8217;s at risk. You can be fair-skinned and you can be dark-skinned. Look at your hands and feet.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Although melanoma is frequently detected in Caucasians, it is detected at a more advanced stage in other ethnicites. It&#8217;s something Vaivela knows first-hand. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It can be Filipinos or dark-skinned people as well.
