  {"id":35449,"date":"2015-06-05T15:25:18","date_gmt":"2015-06-06T01:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=35449"},"modified":"2023-03-15T13:45:25","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T23:45:25","slug":"historic-cemetery-preservation-project-strengthens-connections-to-the-past-and-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/05\/historic-cemetery-preservation-project-strengthens-connections-to-the-past-and-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic cemetery preservation project strengthens connections to the past and future"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7oh7O9T1gWY\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Like most of the world, there are cemeteries throughout <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> that have fallen to neglect. <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> students are doing their part to preserve an important part of history, but there\u2019s more to it than that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people, they believe in after life, so we still take care of our k\u016bpuna once they die,\u201d said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student <strong>Mohuhano \u201cMo\u201d Tuikolongahau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Through a historic preservation program at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/amst\/\">American studies department<\/a>, students, community members and preservation experts are working at cemeteries like <span aria-label=\"Maemae\">Ma\u02bbema\u02bbe<\/span> Chapel Cemetery in <span aria-label=\"Nuuanu\">Nu\u02bbuanu<\/span> to learn how to document, clean and perform repairs on aging and damaged gravestones. They are also contributing valuable information to existing archives and maps while getting valuable, hands-on field experience.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35476\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35476\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-historic-cemetery-preservation-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35476\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-historic-cemetery-preservation-2.jpg\" alt=\"Students use shaving cream to better read the inscriptions on gravestones \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-historic-cemetery-preservation-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-historic-cemetery-preservation-2-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students use shaving cream to better read the inscriptions on gravestones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re looking at really are cleaning headstones, straightening the curbing, doing things that really ensure that these cemeteries are protected for generations to come,\u201d said Department of American Studies Assistant Specialist <strong>Noelle Kahanu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The large majority of gravestones at <span aria-label=\"Maemae\">Ma\u02bbema\u02bbe<\/span> Chapel Cemetery belong to Native Hawaiians and other families with deep ties to the <span aria-label=\"Nuuanu\">Nu\u02bbuanu<\/span> area. Some of the older gravestones date back to the mid to late 19th century. Through their field work, students develop a deeper connection and appreciation of the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important for the community basically because they can come and trace their genealogy,\u201d said Tuikolongahau.\u201cYou\u2019ll see on the headstones that people were born at <span aria-label=\"Maemae\">Ma\u02bbema\u02bbe<\/span>, they passed away in Niolopa, so this is a community graveyard,\u201d added Kahanu.<\/p>\n<p>For many students, preserving gravestones is their way of showing care and respect for those who have passed by taking care of the sites where they have been laid to rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really a cultural and significant place that preserves a connection, and whether it\u2019s a connection to you or for someone else, it\u2019s really that focus of bringing that connection to light,\u201d said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student <strong>Natalie Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Headed by <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa American Studies professor <strong>Bill Chapman<\/strong>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/amst\/historic-preservation\/historic-preservation-at-uhm\/\">Historic Preservation Program<\/a> brings together students, faculty and historic preservation experts to give students hands-on experience in community-based initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>This summer\u2019s program brought together experts such as Nanette Napoleon of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Cemetery Research Project and Richard Miller of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/kala\/index.htm\">Kalaupapa National Historic Park<\/a>.
