{"id":36700,"date":"2015-07-20T10:12:10","date_gmt":"2015-07-20T20:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=36700"},"modified":"2023-03-15T13:47:43","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T23:47:43","slug":"booting-up-the-next-generation-of-cyber-security-professionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/07\/20\/booting-up-the-next-generation-of-cyber-security-professionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Booting up the next generation of cyber security professionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OJNBXFycbek\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Advanced networking technology is taking a lead role in many fields today, from information technology to education and more.<\/p>\n<p>With the increased use of these technologies there is a greater need for professionals trained in cyber security to protect devices, networks and data from security breaches.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Virtually every industry, every business will require some kind of <abbr>IT<\/abbr> touch and therefore will need cyber security professionals,&rdquo; said Governor David Ige.<\/p>\n<p>Through the inaugural, week-long GenCyber Camp at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> in July 2015, high schoolers from across the state are learning about the principles behind cyber security and the importance of cyber-problem solving.<\/p>\n<p>A teacher camp is running concurrently, providing professional development and support for approximately 30 high school educators from 18 public and private institutions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Some of the tips and tricks we&#8217;re going to teach them throughout this week hopefully they can take that back and start applying that in their local environments,&rdquo; said <strong>Steve Auerbach<\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pcatt.org\/\">Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a high school student I need to understand the vulnerabilities that I have and especially with our 21st century we&#8217;re always using smartphones and all this technology so it&#8217;s important for all of us to understand all of it,&rdquo; said Nia Goodrich, a sophomore at Campbell High School.<\/p>\n<p>The camp is sponsored by the Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Department of Education<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/its\/\"><abbr>¶«¾«Ó°Òµ<\/abbr> Information Technology Services<\/a> in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsa.gov\/\">National Security Agency<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a>.
