  {"id":37173,"date":"2015-08-04T13:11:32","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T23:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=37173"},"modified":"2021-08-09T16:50:14","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T02:50:14","slug":"kauai-cc-cleans-puhi-plantation-camp-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/08\/04\/kauai-cc-cleans-puhi-plantation-camp-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> cleans Puhi Plantation Camp cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/kauai-cemetery-cleaning.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/kauai-cemetery-cleaning.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/kauai-cemetery-cleaning-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> faculty and staff joined hands to clean the Puhi Plantation Camp Cemetery\u00a0located on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> grounds, as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College System<\/a>&#8217;s 50th Anniversary.\u00a0About 50 faculty, staff and community volunteers\u00a0cleared debris and trash, dug away weeds, cleaned\u00a0grave markers and placed fresh flowers at the grave sites.<\/p>\n<p>In the Puhi Plantation Camp Cemetery, 97 names are listed on the gravestones&#8212;20 are marked in Japanese and 52 are unknown. According to a 2003 <em>Garden Island<\/em> newspaper article, Grove Farm&#8217;s Puhi Camp was a close-knit ethnically diverse community with workers and their families who came from China, Philippines, Japan, Puerto Rico and Portugal. At one time, there were 600 homes with 1,200 residents. Sugar cane, pineapple and other crops were cultivated until 1968.<\/p>\n<p>The camp is remembered for being a place where people were happy and productive, and appreciative of the richness of a simple way of life. It had its own gas station, slaughterhouse, Chinese laundry, three stores, and places where children could play freely. A former swimming spot known as &ldquo;Up Pond&rdquo; still exists as a reservoir that feeds into <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"loi\">lo&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We thought it would be most fitting to celebrate by honoring those who lived here and the roots of the land on which <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> stands,&rdquo; said <strong>Helen Cox<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> chancellor. &ldquo;Giving back through community service is a hallmark of our mission. This project symbolizes what we stand for and will continue forward.
