Total funding over three years, contingent on program funding by congress, is almost $5.4 million. The annual awards are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$386,876\u2014<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Positive Engagement Project (H-PEP), Co-Principal Investigators Associate Professor <strong>Jean Johnson<\/strong> and Assistant Specialist <strong>Naomi Rombaoa Tanaka<\/strong> with <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cds.hawaii.edu\/\">Center on Disability Studies <\/a><\/li>\n<li>$620,068\u2014Ka Waihona o ka <span aria-label=\"Kaauao\">Ka\u02bbauao<\/span>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.placeshawaii.org\/\">Place-based Learning and Community Engagement in School (<abbr>PLACES<\/abbr>)<\/a>, Principal Investigator <strong>Kay Fukuda<\/strong>, specialist for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/diversity\/\">Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (<abbr>SEED<\/abbr>)<\/a> at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/li>\n<li>$781,739\u2014Place-based Learning and Community Engagement in School (<abbr>PLACES<\/abbr>) at N\u0101n\u0101kuli Intermediate and High School, Principal Investigator <strong>Kay Fukuda<\/strong>, specialist for Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (<abbr>SEED<\/abbr>) at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> said, \u201cThese awards are a testament to our amazing faculty and staff on our campuses whose work advances the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> as a foremost indigenous serving institution. We are grateful to our congressional delegation for their strong continuing support and we thank Regent David Iha, who was instrumental in working with the late Senator Inouye and his office to establish the Native Hawaiian Education programs that are so important to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Native Hawaiian Education Grant awards will be used as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Positive Engagement Project (<abbr>H-PEP<\/abbr>)<br \/>\nThis project will provide early educators with training on strategies to improve school readiness. <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and six contracted partners plan to serve 350 preschool educators, their 3,500 at-risk preschool students and 300 parents over three years. Participants will be recruited from networks with high percentages of Native Hawaiians such as the <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai\u02bbanae<\/span> Ark of Safety, early intervention groups and from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s extensive network of programs and community partnerships. H-PEP will serve educators and parents in at least 20 sites statewide.<\/li>\n<li>Ka Waihona o ka <span aria-label=\"Kaauao\">Ka\u02bbauao<\/span>, Place-based Learning and Community Engagement in School (<abbr>PLACES<\/abbr>)<br \/>\nThis project will serve an elementary through middle school Hawaiian focus public charter school that has a 95 percent Native Hawaiian student population. The project will support academic achievement at the school using a place-based cultural projects approach to student learning, teacher professional development and community involvement.<\/li>\n<li>Place-based Learning and Community Engagement in School (<abbr>PLACES<\/abbr>) at N\u0101n\u0101kuli Intermediate and High School<br \/>\nTeachers and students in grades 7 to 12 will be served by this grant through the connection and relevance of <span aria-label=\"aina\">\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span> and community to teaching and learning.
