Then in her junior year, she received some unexpected and welcomed news. Pagat was notified that she had earned her associate degree from Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> by reverse transfer, a growing trend in higher education that awards two-year degrees to students who complete credit requirements between more than one institution.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s mini steps,&rdquo; said Pagat. &ldquo;Knowing that I had my associate degree and seeing that I was more than halfway there, it pushed me to get my four year degree.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> leads the nation in reverse transfer and its success was highlighted in a recent study by Credit When It&#8217;s Due (<abbr>CWID<\/abbr>), a national initiative to fund and promote reverse transfer practices.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is one of 12 initial states awarded <abbr>CWID<\/abbr> grants to develop and implement reverse transfer programs. According to the study, most other states that received grants saw a two- to five-percent increase in degrees awarded, compared to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>&#8217;s increase of nearly 18 percent.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41637\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41637\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/system-reverse-transfer-pagat-family.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/system-reverse-transfer-pagat-family.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/system-reverse-transfer-pagat-family-260x244.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Danielle Pagat and family<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Students go forward with reverse transfer<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>&#8217;s systemwide student information systems enable <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> to analyze comprehensive student records, course equivalencies and degree requirements across all 10 campuses to identify <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> community college transfer students who have completed the requirements for an associate degree. Qualified students are then notified and the degree is formally awarded.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the past, when these students were unable to finish their baccalaureate degree for whatever reason, they were left without any college credential,&rdquo; explained <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Vice President for Community Colleges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/admin\/executives\/vp_cc.html\"><strong>John Morton<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;Now, through the reverse transfer process these students receive the associate degree they have earned&#8212;all done automatically and permanently entered into their academic record&#8212;so they can join the proud ranks of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> degree holders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> a model for the nation<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a> awarded 1,458 associate degrees via reverse transfer in the last two academic years&#8211;nearly an 18 percent increase in the average number of associate degrees conferred annually by the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> System.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is another compelling example of how the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is setting a model for the nation in how campuses can work together to add value for students and address statewide needs,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/op\/\"><strong>David Lassner<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;Following on the nationwide acclaim for our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/hawaiigradinitiative\/15-to-finish\/\">15 to Finish campaign<\/a>, our reverse transfer capability and our <abbr title=\"Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading\">STAR<\/abbr> Graduation Pathway System, both of which leverage our shared information systems, are additional examples of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> becoming a high performance system in ways that other states are still striving to achieve.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jason Taylor<\/strong>, the principal investigator of the <abbr>CWID<\/abbr> study that documented <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>&#8217;s significant increase in reverse transfer associate degrees, agreed with Lassner&#8217;s assessment of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Reverse transfer seems to reflect a larger strategy at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> System to increase student success rates, smooth transfer pathways, and ensure that students receive a college credential if they&#8217;ve earned it,&rdquo; said Taylor, an assistant professor in educational leadership at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utah.edu\/\">University of Utah<\/a>. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s reverse transfer efforts and policies are a model for other states and systems who are committed to transfer student success and to smoothing the transfer process.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Pagat graduated from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in social science and says her associate degree gave her peace of mind.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You never know where your life will take you. Sometimes we can speed up and sometimes we have to slow down.
