In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Mānoa librarian Kapena Shim and University Archives technician Sherman Seki dove into the collection at 东精影业<\/abbr> Mānoa Library to find Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi<\/span><\/em> newspaper coverage and photos of King’s visit to Mānoa in 1964. Shim shares a recap, below. These historic articles and photographs are available to explore at 东精影业<\/abbr> Mānoa Library<\/a> in the Hawaiian Collection and University Archives & Manuscripts. Additionally, 东精影业<\/abbr> Regent and former Hawaiʻi<\/span> Supreme Court Justice Simeon R. Acoba, Jr.<\/a>, who was chair of the Civil Rights Week committee instrumental in making the week’s events happen, shared his remembrances for this story.<\/p>\n

At noon on February 19, 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a speech to 东精影业<\/abbr> Mānoa students, faculty, staff and community members on the subject of “Progress Toward Desegregation” at Andrews Outdoor Theatre. About 10,000 listeners jammed the seats in the outdoor amphitheater, filling the grass in the center and spilling over onto the lawn outside the wall to hear King describe how his people are using, “moral means to achieve moral ends.”<\/p>\n
