Lovett thinks architects who reach beyond the profession have a lot to offer the 50th state. <\/p>\n<p>Lovett discusses his award-winning <abbr title=\"American Institute of Architects\">AIA<\/abbr>&#8217;s Look up Film Challenge entry <em>Mixed Plate<\/em> and shares his views on the state of architecture in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> today and how to navigate between wanting to preserve your hometown and being open to new ideas. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectmagazine.com\/practice\/q-a-filmmaker-and-designer-kaoru-lovett-on-the-real-hawaiian-sense-of-place_o\">Read the <em>Architect<\/em> magazine article.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>More on <em>Mixed Plate<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Lovett and fellow <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a> graduates <strong>Ronald Ribao<\/strong> and <strong>Graham Hart<\/strong> won the People&#8217;s Choice Award and placed third last year in the <a href=\"http:\/\/lookupfilm.squarespace.com\/#hero\"><abbr>AIA<\/abbr>&#8217;s Look up Film Challenge<\/a> with their entry <em>Mixed Plate: The Architecture of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/em>. Their film compares <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s architecture to a &ldquo;mixed plate,&rdquo; that staple of contemporary island cuisine derived from the state&#8217;s multiethnic history.<\/p>\n<p>Several <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa locations were included in the short film: Kamakak&#363;okalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, Center for Korean Studies and the East-West Center.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by <abbr>AIA<\/abbr> if participating in the Look Up Film Challenge change their perception of architecture the M&#257;noa graduates said, &ldquo;We realized that even the most common buildings have cinematic and beautiful moments within them.
