We are very grateful to the Hawaiian Electric Companies and Johnson Controls for helping us recognize this outstanding work, which is building a better future for the university and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> through sustainable innovations and practices.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Winners<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Green Project Implementation Awards&#8212;student-led sustainability projects with measurable outcomes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>E <span aria-label=\"Hoopaiapuni\">Ho&#699;opa&#699;iapuni<\/span> K&#257;kou: An Integrated Approach to Resource Recovery, Leeward Community College <br \/>\n$10,000 from the Hawaiian Electric Companies <br \/>\nIn support of student efforts to at Leeward Community College to develop a process to collect food waste on campus and turn it into high-quality organic fertilizer and compost for the campus farm.<\/li>\n<li>Rescaling Urbanism, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <br \/>\n$10,000 from Johnson Controls <br \/>\nIn support of applied research and design to develop an alternative framework of building, utilizing wood from the invasive albizia tree, for the sustainability of our island and our planet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43775\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/system-seu-kaleiwahea-lassner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"385\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/system-seu-kaleiwahea-lassner.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/system-seu-kaleiwahea-lassner-260x161.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hawaiian Electric Companies vice president Scott Seu, left, and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> President David Lassner, right, present Christina Kaleiwahea with a Green Student Leader Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Green Student Leader Awards&#8212;students who take on leadership roles in sustainability related activities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Christina Kaleiwahea<\/strong>, Leeward Community College<br \/>\n$5,000 from the Hawaiian Electric Companies <br \/>\nIn recognition of outstanding leadership in sustainability on campus through her roles as Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> sustainability committee member, <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering, and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> club president, student government member and dedicated community volunteer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeff Kim<\/strong>, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <br \/>\n$5,000 from Johnson Controls<br \/>\nIn recognition of outstanding leadership in sustainability on campus through his role as Honolulu Chapter Leader of Citizens&#8217; Climate Lobby and his tireless advocacy and work in the community for divestment from fossil fuels. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Sustainability is about unleashing our creative innovation to solve the problems created by a rapidly changing world for our communities,&rdquo; <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Sustainability Director <strong>Matthew K.
