  {"id":48281,"date":"2016-08-01T08:23:22","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T18:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=48281"},"modified":"2019-02-11T14:28:53","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T00:28:53","slug":"uh-hilo-students-to-have-access-to-maunakea-telescopes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/08\/01\/uh-hilo-students-to-have-access-to-maunakea-telescopes\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo students to have access to Maunakea telescopes"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/maunakea-telescopes2.jpg\" alt=\"Maunakea\" width=\"620\" height=\"345\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/maunakea-telescopes2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/maunakea-telescopes2-260x145.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">Undergraduate students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> will soon have access to the Maunakea telescopes, an amazing opportunity to work with the world&#8217;s premiere telescopes located on the world&#8217;s best site for astronomy. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute for Astronomy<\/a> (IfA) operates the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> 2.2 Meter Telescope, and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> scientists receive a set amount of observing time on nine of the other 10 telescopes. <abbr title=\"Institute for Astronomy\">IfA<\/abbr> manages the allocation of the observing time on behalf of all <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> astronomers, and now under a recent agreement between <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> and the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"http:\/\/astro.uhh.hawaii.edu\/contact_us.php\">Department of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>, Hilo students will receive a guaranteed share of this time. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This agreement is the result of hard work and close collaboration between <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa astronomers,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Physics and Astronomy Department Chair <strong>Marianne Takamiya<\/strong>. &ldquo;It opens the unique possibility for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo astronomy majors to learn how to use the largest and most powerful telescopes in the world.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s use of the telescopes will be increased over a ten year period, receiving 6 nights a year for the first five years, 10 nights a year for the second five years and then 16 nights every year thereafter. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We will now be offering a program quite unique, where students can learn astronomical techniques and scientific research using an ensemble of small and medium aperture telescopes and the formidable facilities on Maunakea,&rdquo; said <strong>Pierre Martin<\/strong>, the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo astronomy and observatory director. &ldquo;A stronger astronomy program at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo also means more educational opportunities for the local communities and keiki, a prominent core value of our mission.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Collaboration provides the world&#8217;s best training opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to allotting time with the telescopes, the agreement seeks to improve the integration of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s physics and astronomy department with the Hilo branch of the <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>. Faculty from both campuses will continue efforts to provide hands-on experiences with observational astronomy techniques and instrumentation for undergraduate and graduate students. <\/p>\n<p>All of these developments are part of an expanding collaboration between the undergraduate astronomy programs at Hilo and M&#257;noa.
