{"id":54158,"date":"2016-12-14T08:00:01","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T18:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=54158"},"modified":"2020-08-07T15:05:47","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T01:05:47","slug":"hawaiian-airlines-partners-in-aircraft-mechanic-apprenticeship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/12\/14\/hawaiian-airlines-partners-in-aircraft-mechanic-apprenticeship\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaiian Airlines partners in aircraft mechanic apprenticeship"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6BkehZqE0C8?showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> students like <strong>Scott Yago<\/strong> are now getting valuable on-the-job training through a new aircraft mechanic apprenticeship program in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianairlines.com\/\">Hawaiian Airlines<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goiam.org\/\">International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This apprenticeship actually puts all the pieces together that you learn at <abbr title=\"Honolulu Community College\">HCC<\/abbr>,&rdquo; Yago said.<\/p>\n<p>The hands-on program for up to eight candidates was designed to meet the growing needs of the state&#8217;s tourism industry and Hawaiian Airlines, one of the state&#8217;s largest employers, with more than 6,000 employees and over 250 aircraft mechanics.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaiian Airlines Vice President Jim Landers said, &ldquo;We see this as an important opportunity to keep local students fully engaged in an industry that&#8217;s very important to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Honolulu Community College is home to the only fully certified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/aero\">aircraft maintenace degree training program<\/a> in the Pacific Basin. From spring 2011 to spring 2016, the college awarded 95 Federal Aviation Administration certificates. Starting salaries after graduation from the two-year program run about $55,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keala Chock<\/strong>, Honolulu Community College&#8217;s dean for transportation and trades, said the college&#8217;s program is a transformative opportunity. &ldquo;Spending two years here, getting really critical training that they need to become technicians in our airline industry&#8212;you can&#8217;t find those type of opportunities elsewhere.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a huge reward built into the new apprenticeship program.
