Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM) is ranked number 19 in the nation in its graduation rate of family physicians according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aafp.org\/\">American Academy of Family Physicians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As the U.S. struggles with a current primary care physician shortage that is expected to be exacerbated to a shortage of more than 33,000 primary care physicians by 2035, this contribution is critical to the health of all Americans,&rdquo; said John Meigs, academy president.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55934\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/manoa-jabsom-pali-momi-260x147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/manoa-jabsom-pali-momi-260x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"147\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55934\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/manoa-jabsom-pali-momi-260x147.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/manoa-jabsom-pali-momi.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pali Momi Medical Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>&#8217;s <strong>Allen Hixon<\/strong>, chair of <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/fmch\/\">Family Medicine and Community Health<\/a>, said the national recognition as a high performing primary care medical school is an example of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> working to meet critical state shortages.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are gratified by the recognition for our efforts so far to close the current gap of 500 physicians in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Hixon. &rdquo;But the shortage is expected to worsen significantly in the next decade, and to make a significant long-term impact, new partnerships and investment are required to expand post-medical school training in our state.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> oversees 17 post-graduate medical residency and fellowship programs in cooperation with major medical centers in the islands. Annually, approximately 235 physicians care for patients under <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty supervision while they work toward licensure and board certification.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Medical education is a team sport, and we are indebted to our key teaching hospital partners, particularly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipacifichealth.org\/pali-momi\/\">Pali Momi Medical Center<\/a>, where our in-hospital training of family medicine <abbr title=\"Medical Doctor\">MD<\/abbr> residents is based,&rdquo; said Hixon.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> also relies on an army of volunteer clinical faculty, many of them <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> graduates. Overall, more than 1,200 physicians in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> serve as volunteer clinical faculty for <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> statewide. They open their private offices to teach medical students.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 percent of the graduates of the Family Medicine Residency Program have remained in the state to care for local patients, something the medical school finds most rewarding. &ldquo;The practice of family medicine is based on a long-term continuous relationship with patients,&rdquo; said Hixon. &ldquo;That continuity of care is one of the most significant factors in improving the health of our citizens.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Tina Shelton<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The John A.
