Since the compounds are found in the plant, they are less toxic than traditional forms of treatment such as chemotherapy. This gives cancer patients a better quality of life when developed as drugs,&ldquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/about-us\/directory\/faculty-staff?catid=16&#038;id=84\"><strong>James Turkson<\/strong><\/a>, grant awardee and director of the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center&#8217;s Cancer Biology Program. &ldquo;Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer that currently has no cure. In addition, the types of breast cancers we are targeting are some of the most life threatening breast cancers with few successful treatments.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p>Breast and brain cancer statics in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> according to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Tumor Registry<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li>An average of 125 women die from the disease each year in the state. <\/li>\n<li>On average 41 people in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> die each year from brain cancer. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58655\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uh-cancer-center-ironweed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uh-cancer-center-ironweed.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uh-cancer-center-ironweed-195x260.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ironweed grown on the Big Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Ironweed plant extract used in study from the Big Island and Thailand<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;The vast natural resources of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> give our researchers a rare opportunity to make scientific discoveries of unique and significant proportions in treating cancer,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center&#8217;s Director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/about-us\/directory\/faculty-staff\/473\"><strong>Randall Holcombe<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;This significant <abbr>NCI<\/abbr> award recognizes the breadth and depth of the natural product research focus of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center, and highlights the national impact our research in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> has in the fight against cancer.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Turkson along with collaborators, Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/cop\/psc\/lengchee.php\"><strong>Leng Chee Chang<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/cop\/psc\/dianqing.php\"><strong>Dianqing Sun<\/strong><\/a> and Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/cop\/phpr\/supakit.php\"><strong>Supakit Wongwiwatthananukit<\/strong><\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy<\/a> published a study a year and half ago showing that the natural compounds from the ironweed plant were effective in killing breast cancer and brain tumor cells and blocked the development and growth of these cancers in the laboratory. In recognition of these preliminary findings, the funds were granted to continue and expand the study.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our team of researchers at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center and <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo will now be able to probe deeper into the cancer treatment potential of ironweed. The plant&#8217;s extract is currently used in Southeast Asia for smoking cessation because of the affects the compounds have on the brain.
