Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr>’s 2017 delegates to HOSA<\/abbr>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Seven students from Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College competed at the Health Occupations Students of America<\/a> (HOSA) 40th Annual International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, June 21–24. Six of the seven students are recent graduates of the Medical Assisting Program<\/a>. Students competed in various events, vying with the top three candidates of each state’s delegation from across the world, including delegates from Canada, Puerto Rico and American Samoa.<\/p>\n

HOSA<\/abbr> is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education<\/a> and the Health Science Technology Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education.<\/p>\n

Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr> students were challenged in complex combinations of skills such as creating a video presentation, doing a medical terminology spelldown, achieving high performance on an exam or demonstrating a clinical routine.<\/p>\n

Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr> students were recognized in these events:<\/h2>\n

  • Medical Spelling—Jolene Jordan<\/strong>, 2nd place<\/li>\n
  • Medical Assisting—Latanya Edwards<\/strong>, 1st place (2nd year in a row)<\/li>\n
  • Nursing Assisting—Bernadette Agcaoili<\/strong>, 1st place<\/li>\n
  • Medical Math—Howard Dang<\/strong>, top 10<\/li>\n
  • Clinical Specialty—Ashley Cabrito<\/strong>, top 10<\/li>\n
  • Sports Medicine—Alden Chong<\/strong> and Royce Moux<\/strong>, move on to round 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The students and faculty advisors\u00a0participated in educational symposiums and workshops that encourage leadership development and networking with other HOSA<\/abbr> members across the nation and the world.<\/p>\n

    Patricia O’Hagan<\/strong>, dean of emergency medical services, health sciences and nursing, said, “HOSA<\/abbr> is a wonderful opportunity for healthcare faculty to expand their teaching strategies, and for administrators to serve as judges which all together support students in developing leaderships skills and enhancing their knowledge.”<\/p>\n
