The half-hour film was co-produced by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>-West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhwo\/clear\/home\/\">Center for Labor Education and Research<\/a> (CLEAR) and <a href=\"http:\/\/pbshawaii.org\"><abbr title=\"Public Broadcasting Service\">PBS<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61945\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/westoahu-jakeproduction.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61945\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/westoahu-jakeproduction.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/westoahu-jakeproduction-260x158.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joy Chong-Stannard, Jake Shimabukuro, Brandin Soquena and Chris Conybeare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The showing at the museum&#8217;s S.C. Johnson Conference Center was accompanied by a talk by <strong>Chris Conybeare<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"Center for Labor Education and Research\">CLEAR<\/abbr> faculty member and the documentary&#8217;s writer and \u00a0producer, and <strong>Franklin Odo<\/strong>, former <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Distinguished Visiting Scholar and former professor of sociology and ethnic studies at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Odo is also a founding director of the Smithsonian&#8217;s Asian Pacific American Center.<\/p>\n<p><em>Canefield Songs: Holehole Bushi<\/em>\u00a0focuses on the folk songs sung by Japanese plantation workers and tells the story of music teacher Harry Urata and his efforts at preserving musical oral histories. The film is part of The Canefields Songs Project, which explores the songs and stories of Japanese immigrants who came to work in sugar cane fields in the late 19th and 20th\u00a0centuries. In addition to the half-hour documentary narrated by noted ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, the canefields project includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/voices-from-the-canefields-9780190274009?q=voices%20from%20the%20canefields&#038;lang=en&#038;cc=us\"><em>Voices from the Canefields<\/em><\/a>, a 272-page book by Odo and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhwo\/clear\/Hole_Hole_Bushi\/index.html\">website<\/a>\u00a0designed by <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> creative media students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/09\/songs-of-japanese-plantation-workers-focus-of-uh-west-oahu-documentary\/\"><em>Songs of Japanese plantation workers focus of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West Oahu documentary<\/em><\/a>, September 9, 2015 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Filmaker Joy Chong-Stannard also served as producer, director and editor, while <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Assistant Professor <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/ekamakanihou\/?tag=jon-magnussen\">Jon Magnussen<\/a><\/strong> served as music advisor for the project. <strong>Brandin Soquena<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> music and creative media student, composed the documentary&#8217;s original music.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary premiered\u00a0in July 2015 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, and was followed by its <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> debut in September 2015 on <abbr>PBS<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.
