This fall she will depart on a mahalo sail around the state. In anticipation of the public\u2019s interest to learn more about navigation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a> (<abbr>PVS<\/abbr>) are offering Level <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> Basic Crew Member Training starting July 11. The course consists of 15 sessions over eight weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Taught by Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Associate Professor and <abbr>PVS<\/abbr> Captain <strong>Robert Perkins<\/strong> at the college\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/node\/142\">Marine Education and Training Center<\/a> (<abbr>METC<\/abbr>) at Sand Island, students will learn about the history of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, parts of a canoe, seamanship and navigation basics.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is amazing to think that the Polynesians, long before the Europeans had ever crossed any oceans, were discovering and settling the largest ocean on planet Earth,&rdquo; says Perkins.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/06\/16\/the-partnership-that-gave-hokulea-a-home\/\">The partnership that gave <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> a home<\/a>, June 16, 2017<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Becoming a crew member is an intense and extensive process. Although participants will not be going on a sail at this level, this course will introduce them to the first steps of understanding what it\u2019s like to be a crew member of a canoe.<\/p>\n<p>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student and <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> crew member <strong>Maleko Lorenzo<\/strong> says, &ldquo;Most people don\u2019t know it\u2019s pretty physical to sail these canoes, these big voyaging canoes.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>In alignment with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8216;s commitment to serving as a model indigenous institution of higher knowledge, Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> is promoting Hawaiian values and culture through these non-credit offerings and its Hawaiian studies degree program. Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> offers courses in Hawaiian astronomy and navigation through its <span aria-label=\"Hookele\">Ho&#699;okele<\/span> program at <abbr>METC<\/abbr> in which students receive hands on sailing practice on a 16-passenger canoe Kamauheheu, which was constructed by Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students.<\/p>\n<p>The Level <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> Basic Crew Member Training course is offered as a non-credit option at $60 per session.
