knowledge of tropical biology and equips them with innovative techniques to teach their classes using an inquiry-based approach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64436\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/kauai-biology-teachers-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"432\" class=\"size-full wp-image-64436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/kauai-biology-teachers-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/kauai-biology-teachers-3-181x260.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brian Yamamoto (left)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;A teacher who has\u00a0a passion for biological science knows that life is organic and messy,&rdquo; said <strong>Brian Yamamoto<\/strong>, senior natural science faculty member at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;That teacher wants students to get dirty, feel the wind as a force affecting growth and touch the textures of life, to understand that biology is more than memorization of information,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>STEP<\/abbr> course, funded by the Kenan Foundation, is a two-week course that takes place at <abbr title=\"National Tropical Botanical Garden\">NTBG<\/abbr>\u2019s such as Kal\u0101heo\u2019s McBryde Gardens, the North Shore\u2019s Limahuli Garden, Salt Pond and K\u014dke&#699;e State Park. <abbr>STEP<\/abbr> is a 3-credit course for both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a> and Department of Education Teacher Develop Program. <abbr>NTBG<\/abbr>&#8217;s gardens, facilities and faculty serve as a resource for educational experiences that inspires student interest in science education.<\/p>\n<p>According to Harvard Professor and Kenan Fellow Barry Tomilson having a &ldquo;good eye&rdquo; is the framework of teaching introductory biology, where students learn, through interaction, the value of observation and how the natural world connects with all academic disciplines. <abbr title=\"Science Teachers Enrichment Program\">STEP<\/abbr> gets teachers reconnected with their good eye, invigorates them to develop learning modules through engaging discussions on teaching pedagogy and solidifies contacts with teachers in the program. <\/p>\n<p>This year, the program welcomed six teachers from California, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, Waipahu High School, Hanalei School, Alakai Foundation and Kaimuk\u012b Middle School.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64437\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/kauai-biology-teachers-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"358\" class=\"size-full wp-image-64437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/kauai-biology-teachers-4.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/kauai-biology-teachers-4-218x260.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>STEP<\/abbr> students are at <abbr title=\"National Tropical Botanical Garden\">NTBG<\/abbr> headquarters looking at rare books<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Michelle Phillips<\/strong>, a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> participant, plans to take her students on field trips to explore how plants adapt to the local environment.
