With this structure in place, the partnership can expand its efforts and scale up seed collection&#8212;with the public\u2019s help.<\/p>\n<p>The arboretum will be offering <a href=\"http:\/\/friendsoflyon.com\/ohia-workshops\/\"><span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> seed conservation workshops<\/a> on each island, free of charge and open to the local community. The worshops provide training on how to properly collect, handle and process <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> seeds, without doing harm to trees or forests, using methods that protect seed viability and ensure conservation value for future restoration.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Hawaii Tourism Authority\">HTA<\/abbr> funding also supports emergency seed banking of these <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> seeds at facilities on multiple islands.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p>Rare plant conservation on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The core partner of Lyon\u2019s Hawaiian Rare Plant Program is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepphi.org\/\">Plant Extinction Prevention Program<\/a> (PEPP), which works with the rarest of the rare: species with less than 50 individual plants remaining in the wild. There are 40 <abbr title=\"Plant Extinction Prevention Program\">PEPP<\/abbr> species on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, where severe habitat alteration by <abbr title=\u201cRapid Ohia Death\u201c>ROD<\/abbr> could have devastating effects on rare plant populations.<\/p>\n<p>It is important for <abbr title=\"Plant Extinction Prevention Program\">PEPP<\/abbr> to rapidly collect seeds from as many remaining rare plants as possible and secure them at Lyon\u2019s Seed Conservation Lab.
