Sosa and Cornwall performed alongside Assistant Professor <strong>John Signor<\/strong> and distinguished vocal artist and Leeward alumni <strong>Starr Kalahiki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the week-long festival, held annually on the campus of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.univ-poitiers.fr\/\">Poitiers University<\/a>, invited dance students and professional dance troupes from across Europe and select regions around the world take part in a collaborative and artistic expression. This year\u2019s festival theme was politics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66373\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66373\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/leeward-france-dance-festival-2-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/leeward-france-dance-festival-2-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/leeward-france-dance-festival-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Festival a Corps students and supporters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The group of four from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> came the farthest and were the only musicians in the festival. Once in Poitiers, the group begin rehearsals and classes with students from around the world and shared <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s music and culture with them.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Signor and Kalahiki, the Leeward students focused their festival performance and music around the story of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span>. The songs they shared included <em>Ke Aloha A Ka Haku<\/em>, or the &ldquo;Queen\u2019s Prayer,&rdquo; and <em><span aria-label=\"Kuu\">Ku&#699;u<\/span> Pua i Paoakalani<\/em>&#8212;two compositions the Queen composed while under house arrest, which tied directly to the festival theme of politics. Cornwall also performed one of his originals, titled, <em>Always Here<\/em>. Thanks to a translator, the largely French audience understood the Hawaiian lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>Sosa and Cornwall also performed original musical pieces during the festival and even stepped out of their comfort-zone to take part in some dance performances.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our students shined!&rdquo; said Signor. &ldquo;It was great to see them grow, and it almost seems like a dream now, like it never happened.
